Questions
Frequently asked questions
How much weight does a pregnant dog gain?
Most gain roughly 15 to 25% of their pre-breeding weight by the time they whelp. Larger litters add more.
When does a pregnant dog start gaining weight?
Very little in the first month. Most of the gain happens in the last three to four weeks as the puppies grow quickly.
Is it normal for a pregnant dog to lose weight?
A small dip from morning sickness around week 3 to 4 can happen. Ongoing loss, or loss in late pregnancy, needs a vet check.
How often should I weigh her?
Once a week, at the same time of day and on the same scale. For small dogs, weigh on a baby scale or hold her and subtract your own weight.
Does weight tell me how many puppies she has?
Not reliably. A dog can gain a lot with a few large puppies or gain less with many small ones. Use an X-ray for a count.
