Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is clear discharge normal in a pregnant dog?

Yes. A thin, clear, odorless mucus discharge is common from about three to four weeks into pregnancy and usually nothing to worry about.

Is green discharge during pregnancy normal?

Green or black discharge before the first puppy is born is an emergency, because it can mean the placenta has separated. After a puppy has been born, a dark green color can be normal as placentas pass.

What if the discharge smells bad?

A foul-smelling or pus-like discharge at any stage can mean infection. Call your vet the same day.

How long does discharge last after whelping?

A reddish-brown, non-smelly discharge can continue for several weeks after whelping. Heavy bleeding, a bad smell or fever need a vet.
