Step 1
Confirmed ovulation date
Use a date confirmed by progesterone or LH testing. A mating date is too imprecise for planning surgery.
Typical planned C-section window
Oct 24 to Oct 26, 2026
Days 61 to 63 from ovulation. Expected natural due date: Monday, October 26.
This is a planning guide, not a surgery date. Your vet chooses the day from progesterone results, her condition and the X-ray, and may move it earlier or later. If labor starts on its own before the date, call your clinic.
Why the date comes from ovulation
Puppies need to be mature enough to breathe and nurse. Counting from a mating date can be wrong by up to a week, so a surgery scheduled from it risks delivering premature puppies. Ovulation dating narrows that to about a day or two.
- Ask your vet about progesterone testing before the mating, so the ovulation date is on record.
- Have an X-ray at about day 50 so your vet can check puppy numbers and head size.
- Book the clinic early and know the 24-hour emergency clinic in case labor begins first.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What day is a planned dog C-section done?
Usually around day 61 to 63 from a confirmed ovulation date, with the exact day chosen by your vet from hormone results and the X-ray.
Can a C-section be planned from the mating date?
Not safely. A mating date can be days off the real conception date, so the puppies could be born too early. Ask about progesterone testing before the mating.
Which breeds usually need a planned C-section?
Flat-faced breeds with a narrow pelvis, such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Boston Terriers, often need one. Evans and Adams (2010) reported rates above 80% in several of them.
What if labor starts before the planned date?
Call your clinic right away. Early labor can mean the date was off or that she needs help sooner.
