Exercise

  • Keep up regular, gentle walks for the whole pregnancy.
  • From about week 6, shorten walks and avoid hard running, jumping on and off furniture, and rough play.
  • In the last two weeks, short, slow walks on a lead are enough. Keep her out of water and off slippery floors.
  • Stop and rest if she pants heavily, lags behind or seems uncomfortable.

What to ask your vet

  • A worming plan for pregnancy and nursing. Some protocols start late in pregnancy, but your vet should choose them.
  • Flea and tick control that is safe for pregnancy and for newborns.
  • Vaccines before breeding, and which ones to avoid in pregnancy.
  • Any current medicine, including supplements. Some are not safe in pregnancy.
  • A check-up and weight check at the scan appointments. See the scan date planner.

Call your vet now if…

  • Vomiting for more than a day, refusing food, or lethargy.
  • Any bloody, green or foul discharge before labor.
  • Fever, limping, or any injury or fall.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a pregnant dog go for walks?

Yes. Gentle, regular walks keep her fit. Slow down as she gets heavier, and avoid hard running, jumping and rough play in the second half.

Can a pregnant dog have flea and worming treatments?

Some products are safe and many are not. Ask your vet to choose products and a worming plan for pregnancy and nursing before you give anything.

Can a pregnant dog be vaccinated?

Vets usually advise having vaccines up to date before breeding. Live vaccines are generally avoided during pregnancy, so check with your vet before any shot.

Can I give my pregnant dog pain relief?

Not without a vet’s advice. Human medicines and many dog medicines can harm the puppies or the mother.

Can a pregnant dog be around other dogs?

Normal contact is fine, but keep her away from sick dogs and from rough play, and keep any intact males away until you are sure of the dates.
