A small litter can mean oversized puppies
When there are only one or two puppies, they can grow large relative to her pelvis, and a single puppy may not trigger labor. Ask your vet about an X-ray at about day 50 and whether a planned C-section is safer.
Eclampsia and low blood sugar
Trembling, stiffness or collapse during late pregnancy or nursing can be signs of low blood calcium, and weakness or wobbling can point to low blood sugar. Treat both as emergencies.
Frequent small meals
Toy breeds have little stomach space late in pregnancy. Offer several small meals daily and keep her warm. Your vet can advise on diet and any supplements.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long is a Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) pregnant?
Yorkshire Terriers are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and most whelp in 62 to 63 days. Counted from a mating date, the normal range is 56 to 70 days, because conception can happen days after mating. Use the calculator on this page to get a date range.
How many puppies can a Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) have?
A typical Yorkshire Terrier litter is about 3 puppies, with a range of 1 to 5. First litters and litters from older dogs are often smaller. An abdominal X-ray after day 50 gives the actual count.
Does a Yorkshire Terrier need a C-section?
Yorkshire Terriers have a higher than average risk of difficult birth. Many vets recommend an X-ray at about day 50 to check puppy size, and a planned C-section is sometimes safer.
What are the signs a Yorkshire Terrier is pregnant?
Around three to four weeks you may notice a smaller appetite, pinker and larger nipples and a clear mucus discharge. Her belly grows from about week six. Confirm with an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30.
When should a pregnant Yorkshire Terrier have an X-ray?
Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
