Puppies are due
- Earliest, day 56
- Nov 24, 2026
- Latest, day 70
- Dec 8, 2026
A 14-day window, based on the mating date. Sperm can survive 5–7 days, so conception may be later than the tie.

Breed profile
French Bulldog
small breed
- Average litter
- 3 puppies (1–5)
- C-section risk
- very high · 81.3%
Worth knowing
- Over 80% of French Bulldogs require C-sections (Evans & Adams, 2010)
- Frenchies are 15.9x more likely to have dystocia than crossbreeds (RVC VetCompass)
- Schedule C-section for day 61-63 from confirmed ovulation date
- Single-puppy litters carry higher risk of oversized puppies
Temperature watch: take her temperature twice a day from day 56. A drop below 99.0°F (37.2°C) means labor within 12–24 hours.

French Bulldog pregnancy at a glance
| French Bulldog | |
|---|---|
| Gestation from ovulation | 62 to 63 days (63 days average) |
| Gestation from mating | 56 to 70 days |
| Typical litter | 3 puppies (range 1 to 5) |
| Size group | small breed |
| C-section risk | Very high (81.3%) |
Due to brachycephalic anatomy, natural birth is extremely rare. Plan for a scheduled C-section with your vet.
Why Frenchie pregnancies are planned around surgery
Puppy head and shoulder size is large compared with the mother’s pelvic opening. Studies of caesarean rates put the French Bulldog above 80%, and a UK VetCompass study found them roughly 9 times more likely than other dogs to be recorded with difficulty giving birth. Most breeders and vets therefore plan a C-section rather than waiting for labor to start.
Dating matters more than usual
A planned C-section is timed from a confirmed ovulation date, usually around day 61 to 63, so puppies are mature enough to breathe and nurse. A mating date alone gives a window of up to two weeks, which is too wide to schedule surgery safely. If you are planning a litter, ask your vet about progesterone testing before breeding.
Small litters, close monitoring
Typical litters are small, which means a single oversized puppy is a real possibility. An X-ray after day 50 gives a puppy count and lets your vet judge head size against her pelvis. Breathing can also be harder for the mother late in pregnancy, so keep her cool, calm and out of exertion.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
How long is a French Bulldog (Frenchie) pregnant?
French Bulldogs are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation, and most whelp in 62 to 63 days. Counted from a mating date, the normal range is 56 to 70 days, because conception can happen days after mating. Use the calculator on this page to get a date range.
How many puppies can a French Bulldog (Frenchie) have?
A typical French Bulldog litter is about 3 puppies, with a range of 1 to 5. First litters and litters from older dogs are often smaller. An abdominal X-ray after day 50 gives the actual count.
Does a French Bulldog need a C-section?
Most French Bulldogs are delivered by C-section: about 81.3% in the research we cite. Plan the surgery with your vet rather than waiting for labor.
What are the signs a French Bulldog is pregnant?
Around three to four weeks you may notice a smaller appetite, pinker and larger nipples and a clear mucus discharge. Her belly grows from about week six. Confirm with an ultrasound at about day 25 to 30.
When should a pregnant French Bulldog have an X-ray?
Between about day 50 and day 55. By then the puppies’ skeletons show, so your vet can count them and compare head size with her pelvis.
