Worth knowing

  • Regular veterinary palpation or ultrasound recommended around day 28-30 to verify healthy embryonic sac numbers

What a typical Golden pregnancy looks like

Pregnancies usually run close to 63 days from ovulation, with litters of about six to ten puppies. Most goldens whelp without surgery, but any dog can have a complication, so know your emergency vet before the due date.

Genetic and health checks come first

Responsible breeders complete the breed’s recommended health screening on both parents before mating. If your dog is already pregnant, tell your vet about any known conditions so they can plan scans and care accordingly.

Setting up the whelping area

Introduce the whelping box about a week before the due date in a quiet room kept at 75 to 80°F (24 to 27°C). Goldens are social and may want you nearby, so choose a spot where she feels safe but you can still keep an eye on her.
