Boston Terrier pregnancy

Boston Terrier pregnancy: gestation, litter size and C-section risk

Boston Terriers have the highest caesarean rate in the research we cite, with about 92% of litters delivered by C-section. Natural whelping should not be attempted without vet supervision, so plan surgery from the start.

  • Do NOT attempt natural whelping without vet supervision
  • Oversized puppy heads relative to the dam's narrow pelvis

Surgery is the norm

Evans and Adams (2010) found 92.3% of Boston Terrier litters were delivered by caesarean section. A narrow pelvis and large, broad puppy skulls are the main reasons.

Timing is everything

A planned C-section is timed from a confirmed ovulation date, usually around day 61 to 63. Without that date, the surgery risks delivering immature puppies, so ask your vet about progesterone testing before the mating.

Choose the clinic in advance

Book the surgery and know the nearest 24-hour clinic in case she goes into labor early.
