Set it up in 4 steps
- 1
Pick a quiet, draft-free spot
A spare room or a quiet corner away from foot traffic, other pets and loud noise. It should be easy to heat, easy to clean and close enough that you can check her often.
- 2
Choose the box and size
A low-sided box or a whelping pen with a front she can step over. Rails about an inch off the floor around the inside help stop her lying on a puppy.
- 3
Line it
Use layers of washable, non-slip bedding or newspaper so you can remove the top layer when it is soiled. Keep a spare set ready.
- 4
Warm it safely
Use a heat source with a thermostat, such as a heat lamp placed well out of reach, or a heated pad covered with a blanket. Keep one side of the box cooler so puppies and mother can move away from the heat.
Temperature
| Puppy age | Nest temperature |

Before the due date
Introduce the box at day 55 to 56, then use the temperature log for the final days. The full whelping supplies checklist lists everything else you need.
